What is E-ZPass?

The E-ZPass is a transponder (tag) that you can put in your vehicle to pay toll. You don’t need to stop to pay toll. Though different states have their own E-ZPass, E-ZPass tag transponders purchased from any one state is accepted across following states. Therefore, if you already have a E-ZPass from any of these states, you are good to use it in Massachusetts.

But if do not have E-ZPass tag from other state, you would need to apply for one. To get a regular E-ZPass MA transponder, USA registered vehicle license plate number is required. Tourists, who rent a car, have just the option to use rental car's license plate if the rental agency allows. Therefore, you need to first check with your car rental agency if they release their rental car's license plate to renter's for getting E-ZPass. In simple words, you need to check if they will let you use the rental car's license plate for registering for E-ZPass. How to mount E-ZPass on the vehicle?

The E-ZPass® tag must be mounted properly before use. If the tag is not properly mounted, it may not work and may be unlawfully positioned.

  1. Clean placement area on inside of windshield with isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) and allow to dry.
  2. Remove plastic tape from back of Velcro™ mounting strips on tags.
  3. Position tag as illustrated below based on your mirror type.
  4. Press tags firmly against the windshield glass.
