If you are a traveler in NY who doesn't have E-ZPass mounted on the vehicles or E-ZPass customers who do not properly mount their E-ZPass tag (which results in their tag not reading properly while traveling on the Thruway), will miss paying for tolls on all-electronic/cashless toll plazas in the New York. For this missed toll, you will be charged the Tolls by Mail toll rate.

For motorists without an E-ZPass, tolls in New York are collected using Toll by Mail cashless tolling system [1]. If you do not have E-ZPass, an image of your license plate is captured and a Toll Bill is mailed to the registered owner’s address on file with DMV. The Tolls by Mail customers pay a higher toll rate than the NY E-ZPass toll rate, in addition to a $2 administrative surcharge per billing statement. This is due to the time and cost associated with the process to identify vehicles that do not have the tag properly mounted or not detected in the vehicle.

Toll Bills are mailed approximately 30-40 days after your first date of travel.

If you missed paying tolls on any NY toll booth, there are multiple ways you can pay for it.

Pay online

If you don’t want to wait for the Bill, you can search and pay for tolls by the license plate on the E-ZPass website [2]. Toll transactions are usually available approximately one week from the date of travel.

Please go to NY Tolls by Mail[3] to search and pay for missed tolls online.

You have two options there:

Search and Pay by License Plate

This option provides the date, toll plaza, and toll amount due. To use this search feature, enter the information based on how the license plate is registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Toll transactions will be available approximately one week from the date of travel.

Pay Toll Bill Received by Mail/Email

This option provides a detailed overview of toll transactions that include images, date/time of travel, toll plaza and the ability to provide an email address to receive future toll bills.
