You don’t need to stop to pay a toll. The transponder is mounted on your vehicle’s windshield. When you travel on any toll road, thruway, tunnel or bridge, the transponder charges your E-ZPass account for the appropriate toll. Find more information on E-ZPass click here

Pay toll later using Tolls by Mail

For motorists without an E-ZPass, tolls in New York are collected using Toll by Mail cashless tolling system [2]. If you do not have E-ZPass, an image of your license plate is captured and a Toll Bill is mailed to the registered owner’s address on file with DMV. The Tolls by Mail customers pay a higher toll rate than the NY E-ZPass toll rate, in addition to a $2 administrative surcharge per billing statement. This is due to the time and cost associated with the process to identify vehicles that do not have the tag properly mounted or not detected in the vehicle.

The Tolls by Mail rate is equivalent to the cash rate.

Toll Bills are mailed approximately 30-40 days after your first date of travel. If you don’t want to wait for the Bill, you can search and pay for tolls by the license plate on the E-ZPass website [3]. Toll transactions are usually available approximately one week from the date of travel.

If you feel you have received a notice of violation notice in error, you may contact the Violations Processing Unit at:

E-ZPass Customer Service Center
P.O. Box 15186
Albany, NY 12212-5186
+1-800-333-8655

Also, E-ZPass customers who do not properly mount their E-ZPass tag, which results in their tag not reading properly while traveling on the Thruway, will be charged the Tolls by Mail toll rate. All E-ZPass NY customers with special discount plans will also be charged the Tolls by Mail rate when their tag is not read. To ensure you receive the E-ZPass NY discounted toll rate, mount your tag properly.

Cashless tolling facility in New York

If you are traveling on a cashless toll facility road, and do not have an E-ZPass, you have the option to pay tolls in advance to your trip, right after you make a trip or, pay tolls once you receive a bill as Tolls by Mail. Either of these ways, you will pay the same toll rates as cash. If you wish to know the toll prices and toll payment methods accepted at each toll booth on your way, the TollGuru toll calculator can help you decide how to pay toll in New York.

Toll Payment options for visitors

If you are visiting New York and plan to drive, and are traveling on any cashless tolling road, the best option would be to:

Get an E-ZPass

It has a wide acceptance across 18 states in the United States. If you already have an E-ZPass from any of these states, you are good to go.

DelawareMassachusettsNorth Carolina
IllinoisNew HampshireOhio
IndianaNew JerseyPennsylvania
KentuckyNew Jersey – DelawareRhode Island
MaineNew YorkVirginia
Maryland;West VirginiaNew York City Area

As toll charges vary depending on peak/off-peak hours, have enough balance in your E-ZPass tag when you travel. The E-ZPass is cheaper than cash on the locations where both are accepted. If you missed paying tolls on the NY toll booth, there are multiple ways you can pay for it.

If you are a tourist and have rented a car, you have the option to use the rental car’s license plate, provided the agency from where you are renting the vehicle permits this. They would need to allow the release of their rental car’s license plate to the renter for registering for E-ZPass. If this is allowed by the agency, register for E-ZPass NY in advance and get the tag transponder delivered to your address.
Here is the link to register for E-ZPass.[4] Find more information on E-ZPass click here

E-ZPass® On-the-Go

E-ZPass® On-the-Go is similar to E-ZPass®, just that it is picked on the go from a retailer location rather than applying for the transponder in advance and receiving via mail. You would need to register the E-ZPass online here[5], before you can use it. You can also get E-ZPass® On-the-Go here[6]. E-ZPass® On-the-Go tag transponder can be picked from the retailer locations in New York only listed here[7]. The E-ZPass® On-the-Go purchased from New York is also accepted in states mentioned in the table above.

Plate Pass

Plate Pass is an electronic toll payment system that enables vehicle renters to use high-speed electronic toll collection lanes and bypass backups at cash lanes or pay tolls at booths where cash is not accepted. The PlatePass service enables you to avoid costly toll violation fines otherwise incurred if high-speed toll lanes are used without a toll tag. You will be charged the cash or play-by-mail toll rate, whichever is higher, as published by the toll authority, plus a service fee per rental day to a weekly or monthly maximum. Despite being a hassle-free option it might turn out to be costlier than getting an E-ZPass® On-the-Go or opting for a car rental agency’s daily flat fee.
