The older Route Nationale 1 (RN1) runs broadly parallel to the A1 through Rufisque, Bargny and Diamniadio and is toll-free
| |||

The RN2 and RN3 offer toll-free alternatives on the northern and central corridors
| |||

The trade-off is journey time and congestion — the national roads pass directly through dense urban centres, and the Dakar–Rufisque stretch in particular can be severely congested at peak hours
| |||

No local bank account or badge is required — manual lanes accept FCFA cash and are the default option for visitors
| |||

All users pay the same posted rates; there is no surcharge for foreign-registered vehicles
| |||

If you rent a car, ask whether it carries a Rapido badge and who is responsible for its balance; many rentals do not, meaning you will use the manual lanes
| |||

Carry small denomination FCFA notes — the Dakar–AIBD airport run is one of the most common visitor journeys on the network
| |||

Frequently Asked Questions
| |||

Can motorcycles use Senegal's toll motorways?
| |||

Yes. Unlike many toll expressways in Asia and elsewhere, the Autoroute de l'Avenir has a dedicated "Moto" tariff class with the lowest rates on the network — from 100 FCFA at the Keur Massar and Rufisque slip roads up to 600 FCFA at the Thiaroye toll plaza. Motorcyclists should still confirm access rules for individual sections before travelling.
| |||

How much is the toll from Dakar to the airport?
| |||

The Dakar–AIBD (Blaise Diagne International Airport) run costs 2,000 FCFA for a light vehicle. This rate was reduced from 3,000 FCFA in December 2018 following a government decision. Heavier vehicle categories pay more.
| |||

How do I get a Rapido badge?
| |||

Rapido stickers are available free of charge at customer service points along the Autoroute de l'Avenir, including the Dalifort service area and the Toglou and Thiaroye toll stations. Once fitted to your windscreen, load a balance through the Sunu Autoroute app, a mobile money partner such as Wave or Orange Money, or a partner bank. The badge is bonded to the vehicle and is destroyed if removed.
| |||

What happens if my Rapido balance is too low at the barrier?
| |||

A flat-rate surcharge applies to any vehicle using an automatic Rapido lane without a valid badge or with insufficient credit. Because recharging in manual toll lanes has been prohibited since 1 July 2023, you must top up in advance — check your balance in the Sunu Autoroute app before setting off.
| |||

Is the toll charged by distance?
| |||

On the Dakar–AIBD corridor, no — the A1 uses an open system where you pay a fixed charge at each toll plaza or slip road you cross, so your total depends on how many toll points are on your route. The new Mbour–Fatick–Kaolack extension is different: it operates as a closed system with three toll stations, charging based on the distance between your entry and exit.
| |||

Is there a toll-free road alternative?
| |||

Yes. The Route Nationale 1 (RN1) parallels the A1 and is free of charge, as are the other national routes. The trade-off is time: the national roads pass through dense urban areas including Rufisque and Bargny, where congestion at peak hours can add substantially to journey times compared with the motorway.
| |||

Who do I call if I break down on the motorway?
| |||

Call the free assistance number 800 00 20 39. The operator will dispatch a tow truck. For complaints, message 78 147 69 69 with your name, Rapido card number and a description of the problem.
| |||

Senegal vs. Neighbouring Countries
| |||

Senegal borders Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia. Senegal's Autoroute de l'Avenir was the first toll motorway in West Africa and remains the region's most developed electronic tolling deployment. Revision as of 13:34, 28 July 2026
Situation Outcome Entering a Rapido lane without a badge A flat-rate surcharge applies; automatic lanes are reserved for badge holders Insufficient Rapido credit at the barrier The same flat-rate surcharge applies — top up before you travel, since manual-lane recharging ended on 1 July 2023 Badge removed or transferred between vehicles The sticker is destroyed on removal and stops working; a replacement must be obtained Vehicle breakdown on the motorway Call the free assistance line 800 00 20 39; the operator dispatches a tow truck Traffic violations (speed, dangerous driving) Handled and sanctioned by the Gendarmerie, not the concessionaire
Recent Changes (2026)
Network Expansion — Mbour–Fatick–Kaolack:
- The Mbour–Thiadiaye section opened to traffic on 29 April 2026, extending the A1 south of Mbour
- The remaining Thiadiaye–Fatick–Kaolack section is scheduled to open in September or October 2026, completing a roughly 100 km strategic corridor into the Sine-Saloum at a reported cost of 484 billion FCFA
- The new corridor is built to 2×2 lanes with provision for widening to 2×3, with interchanges at Thiadiaye, Fatick and Kaolack
- Unlike the open system on the Dakar–AIBD corridor, this extension operates as a closed toll system with three toll stations offering both manual and automatic lanes — meaning distance-based charging between entry and exit
Temporary Holiday Opening:
- For Tabaski 2026, the state opened the Thiadiaye–Kaolack section to traffic ahead of its formal commissioning, accessible daily from 20 May to 7 June 2026 to ease holiday travel
Payment Ecosystem Growth:
- Rapido top-ups now span a wide mobile money and banking network — Wave, Orange Money, Mixx by Yas, Djamo, Wizall Money and Kash Kash alongside seven banking partners — making the badge practical for drivers without a traditional bank account
- Recharging in manual toll lanes remains prohibited since 1 July 2023, pushing users toward app and mobile money top-ups
Under Construction — Dakar–Saint-Louis (A3):
- The A3 Dakar–Tivaouane–Saint-Louis motorway (~200 km) is under construction with completion targeted for 2028
- Further sections are in study phase, including Thiès–Tivaouane, Diourbel–Kaolack, Kaolack–Tambacounda, Kaolack–Ziguinchor and Ziguinchor–Kolda
Planning Your Journey
The Network:
- A1 — Autoroute de l'Avenir: Dakar–Diamniadio–AIBD–Mbour–Thiadiaye, the country's primary tolled corridor and the first toll motorway in West Africa
- A2 — Ila Touba: AIBD–Thiès–Touba, 126 km, opened 20 December 2018, serving the Touba religious pilgrimage corridor
- A3: Dakar–Tivaouane–Saint-Louis, under construction, targeted for 2028
Traffic Volume:
- The Autoroute de l'Avenir carried an average of about 150,000 vehicles per day in 2021, making it by far Senegal's busiest road corridor
- Expect heavy congestion on the A2 around the annual Magal de Touba pilgrimage, and on the A1 south towards Mbour during Tabaski
Toll-Free Alternatives:
- The older Route Nationale 1 (RN1) runs broadly parallel to the A1 through Rufisque, Bargny and Diamniadio and is toll-free
- The RN2 and RN3 offer toll-free alternatives on the northern and central corridors
- The trade-off is journey time and congestion — the national roads pass directly through dense urban centres, and the Dakar–Rufisque stretch in particular can be severely congested at peak hours
For Visitors:
- No local bank account or badge is required — manual lanes accept FCFA cash and are the default option for visitors
- All users pay the same posted rates; there is no surcharge for foreign-registered vehicles
- If you rent a car, ask whether it carries a Rapido badge and who is responsible for its balance; many rentals do not, meaning you will use the manual lanes
- Carry small denomination FCFA notes — the Dakar–AIBD airport run is one of the most common visitor journeys on the network
Frequently Asked Questions
Can motorcycles use Senegal's toll motorways?
How much is the toll from Dakar to the airport?
The Dakar–AIBD (Blaise Diagne International Airport) run costs 2,000 FCFA for a light vehicle. This rate was reduced from 3,000 FCFA in December 2018 following a government decision. Heavier vehicle categories pay more.
How do I get a Rapido badge?
Rapido stickers are available free of charge at customer service points along the Autoroute de l'Avenir, including the Dalifort service area and the Toglou and Thiaroye toll stations. Once fitted to your windscreen, load a balance through the Sunu Autoroute app, a mobile money partner such as Wave or Orange Money, or a partner bank. The badge is bonded to the vehicle and is destroyed if removed.
What happens if my Rapido balance is too low at the barrier?
A flat-rate surcharge applies to any vehicle using an automatic Rapido lane without a valid badge or with insufficient credit. Because recharging in manual toll lanes has been prohibited since 1 July 2023, you must top up in advance — check your balance in the Sunu Autoroute app before setting off.
Is the toll charged by distance?
On the Dakar–AIBD corridor, no — the A1 uses an open system where you pay a fixed charge at each toll plaza or slip road you cross, so your total depends on how many toll points are on your route. The new Mbour–Fatick–Kaolack extension is different: it operates as a closed system with three toll stations, charging based on the distance between your entry and exit.
Is there a toll-free road alternative?
Yes. The Route Nationale 1 (RN1) parallels the A1 and is free of charge, as are the other national routes. The trade-off is time: the national roads pass through dense urban areas including Rufisque and Bargny, where congestion at peak hours can add substantially to journey times compared with the motorway.
Who do I call if I break down on the motorway?
Call the free assistance number 800 00 20 39. The operator will dispatch a tow truck. For complaints, message 78 147 69 69 with your name, Rapido card number and a description of the problem.
Senegal vs. Neighbouring Countries
Senegal borders Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia. Senegal's Autoroute de l'Avenir was the first toll motorway in West Africa and remains the region's most developed electronic tolling deployment. The table below compares the regional toll landscape relevant to cross-border drivers and freight operators.
| Country | System Type | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Senegal | Open system on A1 (fixed charge per toll point) + closed system on new sections; Rapido badge + cash; rates in FCFA | ~358 km in service (A1, A2); ~205 km under construction |
| Mauritania | No developed motorway toll network; road user charges levied at selected points | Limited |
| Mali | Manual cash toll barriers (postes de péage) on national roads | Selected national highways |
| Guinea | Manual cash tolls at selected barriers | Selected national routes |
| The Gambia | No motorway tolls; ferry and bridge crossing charges apply on the Trans-Gambia corridor | Crossing points only |
