Toll Roads in Kenya
Currently, Kenya has only one toll road: The Nairobi Expressway[1],This 27-kilometer highway stretches from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi's Westlands area. The Kenyan government is planning to introduce tolls on more major roads in the country. These include roads linking Athi River to Namanga and Galleria to Karen and Kiambu.
Kenya toll road concessionaires
The Nairobi Expressway is operated by Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation CRBC was responsible for the design, financing, and construction of the expressway under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. This agreement allows them to operate the toll road and collect toll fees for a concession period to recoup their investment. After this period, ownership and operation will transfer to the Kenyan National Highways Authority (KeNHA).[2]
How to pay tolls in Kenya?
There are three ways to pay tolls while using the Nairobi Expressway.
- Manual Toll Collection (MTC) Card
- Functions like a prepaid card for tolls.
- Top up the card balance before using it at toll booths.
- Convenient for infrequent users or those avoiding electronic systems.
- Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) Service
- Uses an on-board unit for automatic toll deduction.
- Requires registering for the service and maintaining sufficient balance.
- Offers faster and more convenient toll passage.
- Cash Payment
- Traditional method using cash at toll booths.
- Might experience queues during peak hours.
- May not be ideal for frequent users due to potential delays.
Using a toll tag is preferred to pay tolls because they offer discounts and can also be used at several parking spots. The toll tag in Kenya is ETC The Moja Expressway company, which operates the 27-kilometer Nairobi Expressway, has announced that M-Pesa will be available as a payment option starting in January. M-Pesa is a much broader mobile money service offered by Safaricom. It allows users to store, send, and receive money using their mobile phones
