Italy - one of the most popular tourist destinations - is a peninsula in south-central Europe. With France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia as neighbouring countries, Italy is a perfect road trip destination with rental cars. Autostrada[1] is a toll road in Italy. Vehicles need to pay tolls to use the broad autostrade network.

You also need to pay tolls at the cross-border tunnels connecting Italy with France and Switzerland.

  • Tunnel Munt La Schera[6]
  • Great St. Bernard Tunnel[7]

Italy follows a mix of close and open systems of tolling.

In a closed system, toll rates are calculated based on the distance travelled on the motorway. To facilitate this, every autostrade is equipped with toll stations at the entry and exit points. You must take a ticket at the entrance of the motorway and hand it over at the exit toll station to get the toll price.

In the open system, a flat fee is paid at the toll station, independent of the distance travelled. Following motorways have an open toll system

  • A8 Milan - Laghi
  • A12 Rome - Civitavecchia.
