Do I Need e-TOLL for Poland? 2026 Update

It depends on your vehicle's total weight. Passenger cars and motorcycles under 3.5 tonnes drive 100% toll-free on all state-managed motorways operated by KAS/GDDKiA (A2 Konin–Stryków and A4 Wrocław–Sośnica). Light vehicles do not require e-TOLL registration or e-paper tickets on state roads.

Tolled Motorway Network (2026)

A1 Motorway (Gdańsk – Łódź – Gorzyczki): The northern AmberOne section (Rusocin to Nowa Wieś, 152 km) is operated by GTC under a private concession with 12 toll collection sites (PPO Rusocin, SPO Stanisławie, Swarożyn, Pelplin, Kopytkowo, Warlubie, Nowe Marzy, Grudziądz, Lisewo, Turzno, Lubicz, PPO Nowa Wieś). Single-ride tickets are valid 48 hours; losing a ticket results in maximum category charges. State-managed sections south of Toruń are toll-free for passenger cars and tolled for heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) via e-TOLL.

A2 Motorway (Świecko – Warsaw – Terespol): The section from Świecko to Konin (255 km) is managed by Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. / II S.A. with toll plazas. The state section from Konin to Stryków/Łódź is toll-free for passenger cars and tolled for heavy vehicles via e-TOLL.

A4 Motorway (Zgorzelec – Wrocław – Katowice – Kraków – Korczowa): The Katowice–Kraków section (61 km) is operated by Stalexport with toll plazas at Mysłowice and Balice. This section is not covered by e-TOLL and e-TOLL devices/app cannot be used here. All other sections (including Wrocław–Gliwice) are state-managed: toll-free for passenger cars and subject to e-TOLL for heavy vehicles.

Expressways (S-roads): All Polish expressways are 100% toll-free for passenger cars and motorcycles. Heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t) and buses pay distance-based e-TOLL charges on designated expressways.

How to Pay Polish Motorway Tolls

Payment methods vary by road management and vehicle classification.

1. Passenger Cars (≤ 3.5 t):

• State Motorways (A2 Konin–Stryków, A4 Wrocław–Gliwice): No payment or app required — 100% toll-free.
• A1 Concession (AmberOne): Cash (PLN, EUR, USD), cards, or automatic ANPR AmberGO.
• A2 Concession (Autostrada Wielkopolska): Cash, cards, E100 cards, bank apps (Millennium, Erste, Pekao, SGB, VeloBank, ING, Pocztowy), or Autopay Videotoll (Poznań–Konin section).
• A4 Concession (Stalexport): Cash, cards, A4Go transponders, Telepass, or Videotoll via Autopay, SkyCash, IKO, Yanosik, and ORLEN fleet cards.

2. e-TOLL for Heavy Vehicles (> 3.5 t) and Buses (9+ seats):

• Requires an OBU device, ELS (External Location System / ZSL), or the e-TOLL PL mobile app registered on etoll.gov.pl.
• Supports prepaid accounts (minimum top-up PLN 20) and postpaid accounts backed by cash deposits, bank/insurance guarantees, or qualifying sureties.
• Integrated fleet cards (Orlen Flota, DKV, UTA, AS24, EuroWAG, E100, AutoPay) can be used to top up prepaid accounts or settle debit notes.

3. EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) Interoperability:

• EETS in the KAS e-TOLL domain is officially accredited for two providers: Telepass S.p.A. and Toll4Europe GmbH. Heavy vehicles using these certified OBUs do not require a separate Polish device on state roads.

Enforcement and Penalties

Penalties for non-payment or hardware errors on e-TOLL network roads are strictly enforced by the Chief Road Transport Inspector (GITD), ITD inspectors, and Customs/Fiscal Service officers:

• Administrative Penalties (PLN 250 to PLN 1,500): Imposed by the Chief Road Transport Inspector (GITD) for failing to pay electronic tolls, entering incorrect vehicle category data resulting in underpayment, unregistered heavy vehicles (> 3.5 t), or inaccurate register data.
• Fines / Penalty Tickets (PLN 500 to PLN 1,500): Issued by ITD or Customs inspectors during roadside checks for obscured/illegible license plates, malfunctioning ELS/OBU units, missing device reference numbers, or satellite transmission signal interruptions exceeding 15 minutes.
• Enforcement Rules: No more than one fine/penalty can be imposed for the same violation on a vehicle in a single calendar day (00:00–24:00). Prepay non-payment penalties are waived if geolocation data reaches KAS and the toll is settled within 3 days of journey completion (does not apply to roadside checks).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Attempting to use e-TOLL on A4 Katowice–Kraków: e-TOLL devices and mobile apps do not work on the Stalexport A4 concession section. Use cash, cards, A4Go, or supported Videotoll apps (e.g. Autopay).
• Confusing fleet cards with EETS OBUs: Cards like DKV, UTA, or AS24 are payment instruments used to settle e-TOLL accounts, not standalone EETS hardware units (only Telepass and Toll4Europe are accredited EETS providers).
• Using legacy viaTOLL OBUs: viaTOLL was permanently shut down in 2021. Legacy devices are non-functional and cause automatic non-payment infractions.
• Car drivers attempting state e-TOLL registration: Passenger cars (≤ 3.5 t) do not use e-TOLL or paper e-tickets on state motorways anymore — state sections are 100% toll-free for light vehicles.
• Declaring incorrect emission class: Declaring a higher Euro emission class on your e-TOLL registration than documented results in underpayment penalties.
