Do I Need a Vignette for Slovakia? 2026 Update
Yes. Any passenger vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using a Slovak motorway or expressway must have a valid eVignette registered to its plate number. Slovakia moved to a fully electronic vignette system in 2016. There are no physical stickers and no toll booths for cars. Cameras enforce compliance automatically.
Key Reality: The standard fine for an automatically detected offence is €150. Depending on the case, fines can range from €150 to €500.
2026 Update: Vignette prices for 2026 are unchanged from 2025. There is no annual price increase for passenger car vignettes in 2026.
Slovakia Toll Costs: Current Rates
Slovakia uses two separate toll regimes: a flat-rate time-based vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 t, and a distance-based electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 t.
eVignette Rates by Vehicle Category (2026)
| Validity Period | Passenger Car (up to 3.5 t) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1-day | €8.10 | Valid for the selected calendar day, until 23:59:59 |
| 10-day | €10.80 | Valid for 10 days from the selected start date. Best value for short stays or transit |
| 30-day | €17.10 | Valid for 30 days from the selected start date |
| Annual | €90.00 | Valid for 365 days from the selected start date |
Rates effective January 1, 2026 and unchanged from 2025. Motorcycles do not need a vignette. A separate trailer vignette is required only when the combined maximum permissible weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes. The trailer vignette costs the same as the vehicle vignette.
HGV Electronic Toll Rates (Vehicles over 3.5 t) - 2026
Vehicles over 3.5 t pay a distance-based toll using an OBU registered at emyto, or an EETS provider. Since 1 July 2025 the toll rate is the sum of three components: an infrastructure charge, a CO2 emission charge and an air pollution charge. Toll is charged on motorways, expressways and selected Class I roads. Other roads are charged at a zero rate.
| Rate factor | How it affects the toll |
|---|---|
| Vehicle weight and category | 3.5 t to 12 t (any number of axles), 12 t and over by number of axles (2, 3, 4 and more), and buses and coaches |
| Euro emission class | Euro 0 to Euro VI, including EEV. Cleaner classes pay less per km |
| CO2 emission class | Classes 1 to 5. Class 1 is the highest rate. Zero-emission vehicles qualify for class 5 |
| Road type | Motorways and parallel Class I roads are charged at a higher rate than other Class I roads |
| Annual discounts | Distance-based discounts apply to eligible vehicles, based on kilometres driven in a year |
Example 2026 rates, excluding VAT, for EURO VI vehicles in CO2 class 1:
| Vehicle category | Road type | Rate (€/km, excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 t to 12 t, any axles | Motorways and parallel Class I roads | €0.1039 |
| 12 t and over, 5 or more axles | Motorways and parallel Class I roads | €0.2677 |
| 12 t and over, 5 or more axles | Other Class I roads | €0.1942 |
For all axle, Euro class and CO2 class combinations, use the official rate tables and discounts on emyto. HGV toll rates are adjusted each 1 January using the harmonised consumer price index.
How to Pay Slovakia Tolls
Payment method depends on your vehicle class.
Passenger Cars (up to 3.5 t) - eVignette:
- Online portal: eznamka - purchase and start date can be set up to 60 days in advance; confirmation by email; no physical display required
- Mobile app: eZnámka app (iOS and Android) - purchase on the go
- Border petrol stations and NDS service points: Purchase available at most major fuel stations near border crossings and on the motorway network, and at self-service vending machines at border crossings
- Supermarkets and post offices: Selected Slovak Post and supermarket checkouts sell vignettes
- The vignette is linked to the vehicle plate number - no sticker, nothing to display; enforcement is entirely camera-based
Heavy Goods Vehicles (over 3.5 t) - eMyto OBU:
- Operators must register at emyto and fit a certified OBU (on-board unit) before entering tolled roads, or use an EETS provider
- OBU uses GNSS (satellite) positioning supplemented by DSRC beacons at gantries to log road usage
- Toll can be paid in cash, by bank transfer, by credit card or by an approved fuel card
- A financial collateral may be required; use the collateral calculator on emyto
- Vehicles are placed in CO2 class 1 by default. Operators can apply for a better class at emyto/CO2 by submitting vehicle documents

Enforcement & Penalties
Slovakia's enforcement of car vignettes is mainly camera-based, using fixed and mobile camera systems on the motorway network. Police can also check vehicles on the road.
- No vignette (passenger cars): The standard administrative fine for an automatically detected offence is €150. Depending on the case, fines can range from €150 to €500.
- HGV - no OBU or evasion: Driving on tolled roads without a registered OBU, with incorrect vehicle data or without paying the toll is an offence under the Act on toll collection. Check NDS and emyto for current penalty amounts.
- Wrong vehicle category selected: Treated as non-payment - ensure the correct plate and trailer status are registered at purchase.
- Foreign registered vehicles: Subject to the same rules; police can require on-the-spot payment or issue a holding fine secured against the vehicle.
Recent Changes (2026)
- January 1, 2026: eVignette prices are unchanged from 2025 - 1-day €8.10, 10-day €10.80, 30-day €17.10, annual €90.00.
- January 1, 2026: HGV toll rates are adjusted each 1 January using the harmonised consumer price index. Check emyto for the current rate tables.
- July 1, 2025: HGV toll rates now combine an infrastructure charge, a CO2 emission charge and an air pollution charge, in line with the EU Eurovignette Directive. Each vehicle is assigned a CO2 emission class from 1 to 5.
- Network: More than 27 km of new road were added to the tolled network in January 2026, and parallel Class I roads follow during the year. Check NDS for the current tolled network map before travel.
- Zero-emission HGVs: Battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles qualify for CO2 class 5, the lowest toll rate. Vehicles registered before 1 July 2019 are otherwise generally limited to CO2 class 1.
Planning Your Journey
Cost Considerations:
- For a single transit crossing (e.g. Vienna to Budapest via Bratislava), the 1-day vignette at €8.10 is the cheapest option
- For a week-long stay, the 10-day vignette at €10.80 covers all motorway driving regardless of distance
- For residents or frequent business travellers, the annual vignette at €90.00 offers the best value
- Vignettes can be purchased up to 60 days in advance - useful for cross-border trips planned ahead
Toll-Free Alternatives:
- Class I roads (non-tolled) are available as alternatives but add significant journey time - the D1 Bratislava–Košice route has no viable toll-free parallel for most of the distance
- Some short motorway sections are toll-free, for example D1 Bratislava Pečňa to Bratislava Východ (16 km), D2 Stupava to Bratislava Jarovce (22 km), D1 Žilina to Žilina Juh (12 km) and D3 Žilina to Žilina Sever (13 km). Check eznamka for the current list
- Electric and hybrid vehicles under 3.5 t still require a vignette - there is no EV exemption in Slovakia
- Emergency vehicles, military, and certain diplomatic vehicles are exempt; check NDS for the current exemption list
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to display anything on my windscreen?
No. The Slovak eVignette is entirely digital and linked to your plate number. There is nothing to stick to or place in the vehicle. Always keep your purchase confirmation email as proof of payment.
Do motorcycles need a vignette?
No. The eVignette applies to vehicles with two or more tracks and a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 t.
Can I buy the vignette at the border?
Yes. Petrol stations and self-service vending machines at major border crossings sell eVignettes. However, buying online in advance (eznamka) avoids queues and lets you set a future start date up to 60 days ahead.
How can I check that my vignette is valid?
Use the vignette validity check on eznamka. For help, call the NDS vignette line at +421 2 32 777 777.
Does my Austrian or Czech vignette cover Slovakia?
No. Each country's vignette is valid only within that country. If you are driving through Slovakia from Austria into Hungary, you need a valid Slovak vignette in addition to any Austrian vignette you hold.
What if I entered the wrong plate number?
Request a correction through eznamka or call the NDS vignette line at +421 2 32 777 777. Time limits can apply, especially for purchases at points of sale, so report the error as soon as you notice it. If the vignette cannot be corrected, you need to purchase a new vignette for the correct plate.
Are buses and coaches subject to the vignette?
Buses over 3.5 t are subject to the HGV electronic toll system (eMyto), not the passenger car vignette. Bus operators must register at emyto and fit an OBU, or use an EETS provider, before using tolled roads.
Can I get a refund on an unused vignette?
Refund requests are submitted through eznamka. Check the refund page for the current conditions before you buy. Select the start date carefully, because a vignette that is already valid is generally not refundable.
