Do I Need Iceland Tolls? 2026 Update

Iceland does not have a nationwide toll road network. There is no vignette, no transponder, and almost the entire Ring Road (Route 1) and secondary road system is toll-free. As of 2026, only two locations charge a toll: the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel near Akureyri in North Iceland, and a newly built Ring Road section through Hornafjörður in Southeast Iceland, tolled from September 1, 2026.

Key Reality: There are no toll booths anywhere in Iceland. Cameras read your license plate automatically and payment must be completed online within a 24-hour window, before or after your trip.

2026 Update: Since January 1, 2026, Iceland also charges a separate nationwide per-kilometer road usage fee (kílómetragjald) that replaced part of the old fuel tax system. This is a road tax on all vehicles, including EVs, and is unrelated to the two toll points described here.

How to Pay Iceland Tolls

Both Icelandic tolls are cashless and paid entirely online or by app, by license plate.

• Online: Pay at veggjald.is up to 24 hours before or after your trip through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel
• App: The official "Veggjald" app (iOS and Android) supports single-trip payment and vehicle registration
• Self-service kiosks: Installed at both ends of the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel since July 2026 for card or mobile payment
• Pre-registration: Register a license plate and card on veggjald.is for automatic billing, up to 120 prepaid trips per account
• Hornafjörður toll: Fully automated ANPR billing, no sign-in required at the time of travel

Enforcement and Penalties

There are no exemptions at either toll point. If payment is not made within the 24-hour window, an administrative collection fee is added and the claim is billed to the vehicle's registered owner. Rental companies typically pass unpaid tolls to the renter along with their own service fee, so paying promptly through veggjald.is or the Veggjald app is the cheapest option.

Cost Considerations:

• A one-way Ring Road trip through both toll points costs roughly 3,700 ISK for a standard car
• Rental car companies usually collect the per-kilometer road tax as a flat daily fee, folded into your booking

Toll-Free Alternatives:

• The Víkurskarð mountain pass bypasses the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel toll-free but can be closed or hazardous in winter
• Hvalfjörður tunnel near Reykjavík has been toll-free since September 2018
• Every other road and tunnel in Iceland, including the rest of the Ring Road, remains toll-free

Can I avoid Iceland's tolls completely?

Yes, in most cases. The Víkurskarð pass offers a free alternative to the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel in good weather. There is currently no free alternative route around the Hornafjörður toll section once it opens for charging.
