FASTag Toll Tag India Complete Guide

System: RFID-based electronic toll collection (NETC) on EPC Gen-2 / ISO 18000-6C standards
Coverage: 750+ toll plazas on National & State Highways (all NH plazas and 100+ state plazas)
Operators: IHMCL (NHAI) runs the programme, NPCI provides clearing and settlement, 26 certified issuer banks and 12 acquirer banks
Technology: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), with ANPR-based barrier-free (MLFF) tolling at selected plazas
Mandatory: Yes, for all Class M & N vehicles (four-wheelers and above) since January 2021

Is FASTag Mandatory in India? 2026 Update

Yes, FASTag is mandatory for all Class M & N vehicles (four-wheelers and above) in India since January 1, 2021, under amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. A vehicle without a valid, functional FASTag entering a FASTag lane pays double the applicable toll in cash, or 1.25 times the toll if it pays via UPI (rule effective November 15, 2025).

Key Reality: Non-compliance results in higher toll charges and tag blacklisting. New four-wheelers sold since December 2017 are required to come with a FASTag, and a FASTag is mandatory for a new third-party insurance since April 1, 2021. Two-wheelers are not charged toll on National Highways, as clarified by the Minister of Highways in June 2025.

2026 Update: The FASTag Annual Pass (launched August 15, 2025) costs ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27 (₹3,000 in 2025-26) and allows eligible private cars, jeeps and vans up to 200 crossings or one year, whichever comes first, at National Highway and National Expressway fee plazas. NHAI is also rolling out ANPR and FASTag-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-free tolling at selected plazas. FASTag remains the primary payment method, and satellite (GPS) tolling has not replaced it.

FASTag Charges: Complete Cost Breakdown

FASTag costs include three components: tag cost (joining fee), security deposit, and first recharge amount. Only the tag cost is capped by the Government (₹100 including GST). Security deposit and first recharge vary by vehicle class and by issuer bank.

FASTag Charges by Vehicle Class (2026)

Vehicle Class Joining Fee Security Deposit Min. Recharge
Car/Jeep (Class 4) Up to ₹100 ₹200 ₹200
LCV/Mini Bus (Class 5) Up to ₹100 ₹300 ₹150
Bus/Truck 2-Axle (Class 6) Up to ₹100 ₹400 ₹300
Bus/Truck 3-Axle (Class 7) Up to ₹100 ₹500 ₹300
Heavy Truck 4-6 Axle Up to ₹100 ₹500 ₹300
Construction Machinery (Class 16) Up to ₹100 ₹500 ₹300

*Joining fee is capped by the Government at ₹100 including GST. Security deposit is refundable at account closure. Security deposit and first recharge amounts are set by issuer banks, vary by vehicle class, and the figures shown are typical values.

Cost Components Explained

1. Tag Joining Fee (One-time):

  • ₹100 maximum including GST (capped by the Government)
  • Some banks waive or reduce the fee for passenger cars and jeeps
  • Required for tag registration and activation

2. Security Deposit (Refundable):

  • Refundable at account closure, subject to clearance of outstanding transactions
  • Held by the issuer bank and usually ₹200 for cars, higher for commercial vehicles
  • Amount varies by vehicle class and bank (₹200-₹500)

3. Minimum Recharge Amount:

  • First recharge at purchase is normally ₹200 (excluding security deposit) and varies by bank
  • Initial balance required for tag activation
  • Later top-ups on an existing FASTag wallet can be as low as ₹1

  • Wallets without full KYC expire after 2 years. IHMCL sends SMS reminders on days 639, 701 and 730, and the wallet expires on day 731
  • After 2 years without a KYC upgrade, recharge is blocked, but the existing balance can be used until the tag shows Low Balance and is blocked

  • If your bank has sent no KYC notification, your KYC is complete

One Vehicle One FASTag:

  • Only one FASTag can be active for a vehicle. All earlier tags linked to the same vehicle are deactivated
  • You can recharge your FASTag with any bank and any method (BBPS, UPI, net banking)
  • Check all FASTags linked to your vehicle number on the NPCI NETC FASTag status page: www.npci.org.in/what-we-do/netc-fastag/check-your-netc-fastag-status

NHAI FASTag (Bank-Neutral):

  • Not linked to any bank at purchase. You activate it and link it to a bank account or NHAI prepaid wallet in the My FASTag app
  • A tag linked to a bank account is topped up automatically when the balance falls below the threshold set in your standing instruction
  • Helpline: 1033

Recent Developments & Future Changes (2026)

FASTag Annual Pass System

₹3,075 Annual Pass (FY 2026-27; ₹3,000 in 2025-26):

  • Valid for one year from activation or 200 crossings, whichever comes first, at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas (around 1,150 plazas)
  • Only for private non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans. Use on a commercial vehicle leads to immediate deactivation
  • Not valid at state highway, state-managed expressway or local body plazas, where the FASTag works as a regular tag
  • Activated on your existing FASTag through the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI website. The fee cannot be paid from the FASTag wallet balance
  • FASTag must be affixed on the windshield, linked to a valid vehicle registration number (not a chassis number only) and not blacklisted
  • Non-transferable. At point-based plazas a to-and-fro trip counts as two crossings, and at closed tolling plazas one entry and exit pair counts as one crossing
  • Optional. After 200 crossings or one year it reverts to a regular FASTag and can be activated again
  • Crossings are not deducted from the Annual Pass at plazas where a local or monthly pass is active

Monthly and Local Passes:

  • Local residents within 20km: monthly pass fee is set per plaza (around ₹350 per month in FY 2026-27)
  • Monthly passes are issued at the toll plaza, at acquirer bank POS locations, or online through the Buy Monthly FASTag Pass link on the IHMCL website
  • No new tag is needed. Your existing FASTag is configured with the pass
  • Local passes, monthly passes, return journey discounts and exemptions are available only through FASTag

MLFF and Barrier-Free Tolling

Technology Transition:

  • In April 2025 MoRTH clarified that no decision was taken on nationwide satellite-based tolling and that FASTag would continue
  • ANPR and FASTag-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling is being rolled out at selected NH plazas, for example Gharaunda on NH-44
  • Vehicles pass without stopping. FASTag deducts the toll and ANPR cameras read the number plate
  • A valid FASTag with sufficient balance and a valid High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) are needed
  • If a toll payment is missed or unsuccessful, an e-Notice is issued. Paying within 72 hours avoids double charges
  • GNSS (satellite) tolling remains at the policy and pilot stage and has not replaced FASTag

  • New four-wheelers sold since December 2017 come with FASTag
  • Needed for a new third-party insurance since April 1, 2021
  • One FASTag per vehicle (non-transferable). Earlier tags on the same vehicle are deactivated

Penalty Structure:

  • No valid, functional FASTag in a FASTag lane: double the toll if paid in cash, 1.25 times the toll if paid via UPI (since November 15, 2025)
  • Double toll charge when the FASTag is not affixed on the front windshield
  • Blacklisting of tags for insufficient balance, vehicle-tag class mismatch or violations. A blacklisted tag cannot be used to pay toll
  • A tag used on another vehicle is blacklisted and no new tag is issued against that vehicle number
  • Loose FASTags (carried in hand) can be reported for blacklisting

Blacklisting & Issues

Common Blacklisting Reasons:

  • Insufficient account balance
  • Vehicle-tag class mismatch
  • Improper windscreen affixation
  • Carrying tag in hand instead of proper mounting
  • Outstanding dues or violations

Resolving Tag Issues:

  • Call the toll-free number of your issuer bank to find the reason for the blacklist
  • Recharge when you receive the low balance alert
  • My FASTag app tag status colours: Green for active with sufficient balance, Orange for low balance, Red for blacklisted
  • Call 1033 if you are stopped despite a valid tag, the plaza does not accept FASTag, or the plaza cannot read your tag

Exemptions & Disputes

Exempted FASTag:

  • Vehicles exempt under the NH Fee Rules (34 listed categories, including dignitaries, armed forces and police in uniform, fire-fighting vehicles, ambulances, funeral vans and vehicles designed for persons with physical disability) must still affix an exempted FASTag
  • Issued free of cost, and only by an agency authorised by NHAI, not by banks
  • Valid for 5 years for government vehicles and 1 year for private vehicles. For MPs, MLAs and MLCs it is valid for the tenure of parliament or assembly
  • Apply on the IHMCL web portal with the RC, ID proof, proof of exemption and the signed application form

Disputes and Equipment Failure:

  • Report an incorrect deduction to your issuer bank within 40 days of the transaction. Chargebacks normally take 20-30 working days
  • If ETC equipment at a plaza is not working, a vehicle with a valid FASTag and sufficient balance is allowed to pass free of cost
  • Escalate unresolved complaints through the 1033 helpline to NHAI/IHMCL

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one FASTag for multiple vehicles?

No, FASTag is issued against the RC of one vehicle and cannot be transferred. If it is used on another vehicle, the plaza system detects a class mismatch, the tag can be blacklisted, and no new tag is issued for that vehicle number. Under One Vehicle One FASTag, only the latest tag on a vehicle stays active.

What if my FASTag account has insufficient balance?

Your tag can be blacklisted by the issuer bank and cannot be used at toll plazas until you recharge. A vehicle without a valid, functional tag pays double the toll in cash or 1.25 times the toll via UPI. Recharge as soon as you receive the low balance alert.

How do I check my FASTag balance?

If you registered your mobile number with the NHAI Prepaid Wallet, give a missed call to +91-8884333331 (toll-free). Otherwise use the My FASTag app tag status, SMS alerts, your issuer bank's mobile app, or the FASTag customer portal. You can view the status of all tags linked to your vehicle on the NPCI NETC FASTag status page.

Are two-wheelers required to have FASTag?

No, two-wheelers are not charged toll on National Highways, as clarified by the Minister of Highways in June 2025, so they do not need a FASTag.

Who can use the FASTag Annual Pass?

Private non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans with a valid FASTag affixed on the windshield and registered with a vehicle registration number. It works at NH and National Expressway plazas and costs ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27.

Can I get a refund when closing my FASTag account?

Yes, the security deposit and any remaining balance are refundable upon account closure with the issuer bank, subject to clearance of outstanding transactions.

What should I do if I sell my vehicle or lose my FASTag?

On a sale, the original owner closes the FASTag account with the issuer bank and the new owner gets a new FASTag from any issuer bank. If a tag is lost, call your issuer bank customer care to block it. If it is damaged, ask the issuer bank for a replacement.
