| − |
| + |
No, an ETC transponder is not legally required to drive on Chinese expressways — cash lanes remain widely available. However, ETC users receive a mandatory 5% discount off all expressway tolls nationwide, making it the significantly cheaper option for frequent drivers.
|
| − |
Key Reality: China | + |
Key Reality: China operates the world's longest toll road network at over 177,000 km of expressways. Most intercity trips will pass multiple toll plazas. For a Beijing–Shanghai expressway run (1,463 km), a passenger car pays approximately ¥463 at cash rates or ¥440 with ETC discount. Without ETC, cash lane queues at major plazas can add 20–40 minutes during peak periods and holidays.
|
| − |
| + |
2026 Update: The Ministry of Transport has continued its nationwide ETC penetration push, with ETC lanes now mandatory priority lanes at all National Expressway Network plazas. Free holiday periods (Spring Festival, National Day, May Day, Qingming, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn) apply only to passenger vehicles with 7 seats or fewer, with exemptions applying to ETC transactions automatically. Cash users still qualify but must queue at staffed lanes.
|
| − | < | + |
Foreign Visitors: Foreign-registered and rental vehicles can use cash lanes freely. Renting a car in China typically includes an ETC card arrangement through the rental company at a daily service fee. Foreign-issued bank cards cannot independently register for an ETC account — a Chinese bank account or Alipay/WeChat Pay linkage is required.
|

| + |
No. China's ETC system uses a proprietary DSRC standard not compatible with foreign transponders (including Hong Kong's Autotoll or South Korea's Hi-pass). Foreign drivers must use cash or mobile payment, or rent a vehicle with an existing ETC OBU from a rental company.
| ||

China Toll Roads Complete Guide
System: Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) — RFID transponder + manual cash lanes
Operator: Ministry of Transport (MoT); provincial expressway authorities and concession operators
Currency: Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY / ¥)
Coverage: National Expressway Network (NEN) — 177,000+ km; provincial highways; bridges and tunnels
Technology: RFID ETC transponders (OBU), ANPR cameras, gantry overhead readers, mobile Alipay/WeChat Pay at select plazas
Do I Need an ETC Transponder for China? 2026 Update
No, an ETC transponder is not legally required to drive on Chinese expressways — cash lanes remain widely available. However, ETC users receive a mandatory 5% discount off all expressway tolls nationwide, making it the significantly cheaper option for frequent drivers.
China Toll Costs: Current Rates
China uses a distance-based tolling model. The base rate per kilometre is set nationally but applied by provincial authorities, meaning per-km rates vary slightly by province and road concession. The figures below reflect the standard national benchmark rates effective 2026.
Current Expressway Toll Rates by Vehicle Class (2026)
| Vehicle Class | Description | Cash Rate (¥/km) | ETC Rate (¥/km) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | Passenger cars ≤7 seats, height ≤1.3m | ¥0.40–0.50 | ¥0.38–0.48 | 5% ETC discount; free on 7 public holidays |
| Class 2 | Passenger vehicles 8–19 seats; light trucks ≤2 axles, ≤20t | ¥0.60–0.75 | ¥0.57–0.71 | ETC 5% discount applies |
| Class 3 | Passenger vehicles 20–40 seats; medium trucks 2–3 axles | ¥0.90–1.10 | ¥0.86–1.05 | Includes intercity coaches |
| Class 4 | Large passenger vehicles 41+ seats; heavy trucks 4 axles | ¥1.20–1.50 | ¥1.14–1.43 | Oversize permit required for width >2.5m |
| Class 5 | Extra-heavy trucks 5–6 axles, semi-trailers, road trains | ¥1.60–2.20 | ¥1.52–2.09 | Weight-based surcharges apply above 55t gross |
| Motorcycles | Two-wheeled motor vehicles | ¥0.20–0.25 | ¥0.19–0.24 | Banned from expressways in many provinces; use G-class national roads |
Major Route Example Costs (Class 1 Passenger Car, 2026)
| Route | Distance | Cash Toll | ETC Toll |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing – Shanghai (G2) | 1,463 km | ~¥463 | ~¥440 |
| Shanghai – Guangzhou (G15 coastal) | 1,765 km | ~¥550 | ~¥523 |
| Beijing – Guangzhou (G4) | 2,284 km | ~¥720 | ~¥684 |

Major Bridge and Tunnel Tolls (2026)
| Structure | Location | Class 1 Car | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge | Pearl River Delta | ¥150 (passenger shuttle bus system) | Private cars require cross-border licence plate quota |
| Yangtze River Tunnel (Nanjing) | Jiangsu | ¥25 | ETC discount applies |
| Hangzhou Bay Bridge | Zhejiang | ¥80 | 36 km; one of world's longest sea crossings |
| Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge | Shanghai / Jiangsu | ¥30 | Connects Pudong to Chongming Island |
How to Pay China Tolls
China supports several payment methods at toll plazas across its expressway network:
1. ETC Transponder (Recommended):
- On-Board Unit (OBU) RFID transponder installed on windshield
- Linked to a Chinese bank card or Alipay/WeChat Pay wallet
- 5% discount on all expressway tolls nationwide
- Available from banks, postal offices, highway service areas, and automotive shops
- Activation requires Chinese ID, bank card, and vehicle registration document (foreigners cannot self-register without a Chinese bank account)
- Dedicated ETC lanes marked with green overhead panels — do not enter without a functioning OBU
2. Cash Payment:
- Accepted at staffed manual lanes at all toll plazas
- CNY banknotes and coins; no foreign currency accepted
- No cash discount — full published rate applies
- Queues can be significantly longer during Golden Week and Spring Festival
3. Mobile Payment (Alipay / WeChat Pay):
- Available at an expanding number of manual lanes via QR code scan
- Foreign visitors can now link international Visa/Mastercard to Alipay International for small payments — check Alipay's current limits before travel
- No ETC 5% discount applies to mobile payments
4. Rental Car ETC Arrangements:
- Most major rental companies (Hertz, Avis, local operators) provide ETC-equipped vehicles with a service fee of approximately ¥10–20/day plus actual toll charges
- Charges are typically billed to the credit card on file after return
To calculate toll costs for cars, trucks, motorcycles and all vehicle types across China expressways, use the TollGuru China toll calculator:
Enforcement and Penalties
China operates a strict enforcement regime across its expressway network. Enforcement is handled jointly by expressway traffic police (高速公路交警) and provincial highway authorities.
Toll Evasion:
- Driving through a toll barrier without payment: fine of 5× the applicable toll amount, minimum ¥200
- Using a falsified or mismatched ETC card: criminal liability possible; vehicle impoundment
- Entering ETC lane without a transponder: ¥200–500 fine; vehicle redirected to manual lane
Weight and Classification Violations:
- All expressway toll plazas operate weigh-in-motion sensors; overloaded trucks are diverted to static scales
- Overloading above 30% of rated capacity: fines of ¥500–2,000 plus mandatory off-loading before proceeding
- Misclassifying vehicle type to pay a lower toll: retroactive toll plus fine of 3–5× toll difference
Social Credit Integration:
- Repeated toll violations are linked to the national transport credit system
- Companies with multiple truck violations face restrictions on freight licensing and route permits
Recent Changes (2026)
Free Holiday Toll Exemptions:
- The seven statutory holiday free-toll periods continue in 2026 for Class 1 passenger vehicles (≤7 seats)
- Spring Festival 2026 free period: January 28 – February 4 (subject to MoT confirmation)
- National Day 2026: October 1–7
- New energy vehicles (NEVs) and commercial trucks remain toll-exempt on select provincial roads in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu as part of green logistics incentive pilots
Network Expansion:
- China's National Expressway Network exceeded 177,000 km in 2025 and continues to expand under the 14th Five-Year Plan targets; several western province routes opened in late 2025 and early 2026
- New tolled expressways in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Qinghai have extended coverage to previously remote corridors
Technology and Payment Upgrades:
- Multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) gantry tolling pilots expanded to additional sections of G2 (Beijing–Shanghai) and G4 (Beijing–Hong Kong–Macao) expressways in 2025–2026, eliminating stop-and-go at those plazas entirely
- Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance at manual lanes extended to all provincial expressway plazas by end of 2025
- ETC national interoperability fully operational — a single OBU account works seamlessly across all 31 mainland provinces and autonomous regions
Truck Axle-Weight Rules:
- Updated per-axle weight limits took effect in several provinces in 2025, aligning with national GB 1589-2016 standards; enforcement tightened with new roadside dynamic weigh stations on G50 and G60 routes
Planning Your Journey
Cost Considerations:
- Short urban expressway trip (30–60 km): ¥12–30 for a passenger car
- Intercity trip (200–500 km): ¥65–160 for a passenger car
- Cross-country run (1,000+ km): ¥320–500+ for a passenger car; Class 5 trucks pay 3–4× these amounts
- ETC users save 5% on every toll — meaningful on long-haul routes
Holiday Traffic:
- Golden Week (National Day, October 1–7) and Spring Festival are the two most congested periods — toll plazas near major cities see multi-hour queues on opening and closing days
- Toll-free periods dramatically increase passenger car volumes; travel midweek if possible
- Trucks are typically advised to travel during late-night hours for better flow and reduced enforcement scrutiny during holidays
Toll-Free Alternatives:
- National roads (G-class, prefixed with a single digit without the expressway shield) are generally toll-free but are slower and often pass through urban centres
- Provincial roads (S-class) are mostly toll-free outside of specific bridge or tunnel crossings
- Motorcycles are prohibited on most expressways and should use national or provincial roads
For Foreign Drivers:
- A Chinese driving licence or an internationally recognised permit endorsed for China is required — most foreign licences are not directly accepted; a temporary Chinese licence must be obtained in advance
- Rental cars come with Chinese plates and can use ETC or cash lanes freely
- Carry sufficient CNY cash for tolls if not using a rental ETC arrangement
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Chinese expressways free during public holidays?
Yes — for private passenger vehicles with 7 or fewer seats during 7 designated statutory holidays (Spring Festival, Qingming, May Day, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn, National Day, and the New Year holiday). Commercial vehicles, buses over 7 seats, and trucks pay full tolls throughout. The exemption applies automatically via ETC or at staffed lanes.
Can I use a foreign ETC or transponder in China?
No. China's ETC system uses a proprietary DSRC standard not compatible with foreign transponders (including Hong Kong's Autotoll or South Korea's Hi-pass). Foreign drivers must use cash or mobile payment, or rent a vehicle with an existing ETC OBU from a rental company.
Do electric vehicles get toll discounts in China?
Not universally. The standard 5% ETC discount applies to all vehicles including EVs. Several provincial governments offer additional incentive pilots (full exemption or extra discounts for new energy vehicles on select provincial expressways in Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang), but these are not a national standard as of 2026.
What happens if I do not pay a toll?
A fine of 5× the toll amount (minimum ¥200) is issued. ANPR cameras record all vehicles; unpaid tolls are linked to the vehicle registration and can result in refusal of annual vehicle inspection (年检) until settled. For rental cars, the rental company recovers the toll and fine from the renter's credit card.
Are motorcycles allowed on Chinese expressways?
Generally no. Motorcycles are banned from expressways in most provinces. They must use national roads (G-prefixed) or provincial roads (S-prefixed). A small number of provincial expressways in southwest China permit motorcycles under 250cc with a valid expressway permit — check local rules before travel.
How do trucks pay tolls in China?
Trucks (Classes 2–5) pay distance-based tolls calculated by axle count, vehicle weight, and cargo type. All trucks must carry a valid road transport permit. ETC is available and recommended for trucks. Overweight trucks are flagged at weigh-in-motion sensors and directed to static scales before being permitted to proceed.
Does the ETC discount apply to bridge and tunnel tolls?
Yes, the 5% ETC discount applies to all expressway tolls including bridges and tunnels that form part of the National Expressway Network. Some standalone municipal bridges operated outside the expressway system may not participate — check locally.
