Do I Need PanaPass for Panama Tolls? 2026 Update

Yes — PanaPass is required for the two most important toll roads in Panama City. Corredor Sur and Corredor Norte operate with 100% electronic tolling and no cash payment option at all. Without a PanaPass, you cannot use these roads and will need to use alternative routes through congested city streets, adding 2-3 hours to airport transfers.

Key Reality: Most rental cars in Panama City already have a PanaPass installed. At time of rental, you will be offered either a daily unlimited fee or a per-use-plus-admin-fee arrangement — if you plan to use toll roads more than twice, the unlimited daily option is typically better value. PanaPass cannot be obtained at the airport; the two purchase locations are near Albrook Mall and at Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City.

2026 Update: The three-road toll system remains unchanged in 2026. The new Cuarto Puente (Fourth Bridge over the Panama Canal, $2.14 billion project) is expected to open with toll collection in 2028 — it is not yet operational. The Autopista La Chorrera (Panama City to La Chorrera, 44 km) remains toll-free since 2009. ENA Corredores continues operating Corredor Sur and Norte under its concession structure.

Can I avoid the toll roads in Panama City?

Yes. Avenida Domingo Díaz (which becomes Tumba Muerto) is a toll-free alternative to Corredor Norte for many routes. Cinta Costera is free along the waterfront. Avoiding the Corredores adds significant time due to heavy Panama City traffic.

Can I use PanaPass on the Colón Expressway?

No. The Autopista to Colón is a different operator (MOP) and accepts cash only at USD$4.50 each way. PanaPass does not work on this road — you must have cash.

Are toll roads required to visit Pacific beaches or Boquete?
