PanaPass is required for only 2 of Panama's 3 toll roads - but they're the most important ones. Corredor Sur and Corredor Norte in Panama City operate with 100% electronic tolling and no cash payment options.

+

Yes — PanaPass is required for the two most important toll roads in Panama City. Corredor Sur and Corredor Norte operate with 100% electronic tolling and no cash payment option at all. Without a PanaPass, you cannot use these roads and will need to use alternative routes through congested city streets, adding 2-3 hours to airport transfers.

Key Reality: Without PanaPass, you cannot use Corredor Sur or Corredor Norte, forcing lengthy detours through congested city streets that can add 2-3 hours to airport transfers.

Key Reality: Most rental cars in Panama City already have a PanaPass installed. At time of rental, you will be offered either a daily unlimited fee or a per-use-plus-admin-fee arrangement — if you plan to use toll roads more than twice, the unlimited daily option is typically better value. PanaPass cannot be obtained at the airport; the two purchase locations are near Albrook Mall and at Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City.

2025 Update: PanaPass costs $15 and must be purchased at two specific Panama City locations. Rental cars typically include PanaPass with daily fees or pay-per-use options.

2026 Update: The three-road toll system remains unchanged in 2026. The new Cuarto Puente (Fourth Bridge over the Panama Canal, $2.14 billion project) is expected to open with toll collection in 2028 — it is not yet operational. The Autopista La Chorrera (Panama City to La Chorrera, 44 km) remains toll-free since 2009. ENA Corredores continues operating Corredor Sur and Norte under its concession structure.

Panama Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: 3 toll roads only: Corredor Sur (electronic/PanaPass), Corredor Norte (electronic/PanaPass), Autopista Colón (cash only)
Coverage: Panama City metro area + Trans-Isthmian highway to Colón
Currency: US Dollar (USD) - Panama's official currency
Technology: PanaPass RFID windshield sticker (Corredores); FastPass interoperable; cash at Colón Expressway
Operators: ENA Corredores (Corredor Sur & Norte), Ministry of Public Works (MOP - Colón Expressway)

Do I Need PanaPass for Panama Tolls? 2026 Update

Panama Toll Costs: Current Rates (2026)

The 3 Toll Roads

Road Route Rate (Cars) Payment
Corredor Sur (21 km) Tocumen Airport to Av. Balboa/Paitilla USD $0.50–$3.50 per plaza PanaPass ONLY — no cash
Corredor Norte (25–30 km) Panama City to Tocumen Airport (northern route) USD $0.50–$3.50 per plaza PanaPass ONLY — no cash
Autopista Colón (59 km) Panama City to Colón (Trans-Isthmian) USD $4.50 each way Cash ONLY — PanaPass does not work here

Total corridor costs: Driving from Tocumen Airport to Av. Balboa via Corredor Sur or Norte with multiple plazas typically costs USD$3–8 total depending on route and number of plazas traversed.

How to Pay Panama Tolls

1. PanaPass (Required for Corredor Sur & Norte):

 • RFID sticker mounted on vehicle windshield; registered to specific licence plate — not transferable between vehicles
 • USD $15 purchase price + initial balance required; top up via ENA Corredores website chat (WhatsApp or online), Puma gas stations, or in person
 • Only 2 purchase locations in Panama City: near Albrook Mall (after Tribunal Electoral) and at Atlapa Convention Center
 • Rental cars: PanaPass typically pre-installed; choose daily unlimited or per-use-plus-admin fee at rental desk

2. FastPass (Interoperable with PanaPass):

 • Works at Corredor Sur and Norte; interoperable with PanaPass system

3. Cash (Autopista Colón only):

 • The Autopista to Colón accepts cash only — PanaPass does NOT work on this road
 • USD $4.50 each way; pay at toll booths

To calculate toll costs for Panama's road network, use TollGuru Panama toll calculator:

Recent Changes (2026)

 • The 3-road toll system remains unchanged in structure and rates for 2026
 • Cuarto Puente (Fourth Bridge over Panama Canal, $2.14B project) under construction; expected operational in 2028 with toll collection — not yet active
 • Autopista La Chorrera (44 km to La Chorrera) continues toll-free since 2009 - no change planned
 • Pan-American Highway upgrades continue with 4-lane sections extending Panama City to Santiago de Veraguas and the David-Capacho border section — all toll-free
 • New David-Bajo Boquete freeway (38 km) and Chitré-Las Tablas freeway (30 km) remain toll-free
 • Government's Plan Nacional de Rehabilitación Vial ($6.9M budget) active for road maintenance nationwide

Planning Your Journey

 • Tocumen Airport to Panama City: Via Corredor Sur or Norte (PanaPass required) — approximately 25-30 minutes; alternative via Av. Domingo Díaz is toll-free but 1.5-2 hours longer in traffic
 • Panama City to Colón: Autopista Colón (59 km, USD$4.50 cash) — approximately 1 hour; toll-free Transístmica alternative exists but ~1.5-2 hours in traffic
 • Most of Panama: Outside Panama City, roads are toll-free. Pacific beaches (Coronado, Santa Catalina), David, Boquete, Azuero Peninsula — all toll-free
 • Driving in Panama City without GPS is very challenging — many streets lack signs; directions use landmarks

Panama vs. Central American Neighbours

Country System Typical Cost Coverage

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid the toll roads in Panama City?

Yes. Avenida Domingo Díaz (which becomes Tumba Muerto) is a toll-free alternative to Corredor Norte for many routes. Cinta Costera is free along the waterfront. Avoiding the Corredores adds significant time due to heavy Panama City traffic.

Can I use PanaPass on the Colón Expressway?

No. The Autopista to Colón is a different operator (MOP) and accepts cash only at USD$4.50 each way. PanaPass does not work on this road — you must have cash.

Are toll roads required to visit Pacific beaches or Boquete?

No. Once outside Panama City, all other roads in Panama are toll-free. Driving to Pacific beaches (Coronado, Santa Catalina, Playa Blanca), Boquete, David, El Valle, Chiriquí, or the Azuero Peninsula involves no toll charges.
