NHAI Toll Rates Complete Guide

System: Electronic toll collection (FASTag RFID) + barrier-free MLFF tolling (ANPR with FASTag, select plazas)
Coverage: About 1,150 fee plazas on National Highways and National Expressways
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
Technology: FASTag RFID, ANPR cameras with AI analytics, MLFF barrier-free tolling
Operators: NHAI, Private Concessionaires, State Highway Authorities

Do I Need FASTag for NHAI Toll Roads? 2026 Update

Yes, FASTag is mandatory for all vehicles (Class M & N) on NHAI toll roads since January 1, 2021. Without a valid, functional FASTag, you'll pay double the toll fee in cash or 1.25 times the fee through UPI (effective November 15, 2025), and face delays at toll plazas across India's extensive highway network.

Key Reality: With about 1,150 fee plazas operational across India, driving without a valid FASTag means paying 2x in cash or 1.25x by UPI, longer queues, and potential blacklisting of the tag. The FASTag annual pass (₹3,075 for FY 2026-27) covers 200 crossings or one year for private cars, jeeps and vans.

2026 Update: NHAI is rolling out barrier-free Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling that combines ANPR cameras with AI analytics and FASTag, with 5 of 17 awarded fee plazas already live. Tolls on sections with bridges, tunnels, flyovers and elevated roads are reduced by up to 50%, and partially opened expressways are charged at the lower National Highway rate. GPS-based tolling remains under further deliberation.

NHAI Toll Rates: Current Structure

NHAI collects tolls under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, with fees based on vehicle classification, distance traveled, and infrastructure type. Fees are notified for each fee plaza and displayed at the plaza.

Current Toll Rates by Vehicle Classification (2026)

Vehicle Class FASTag Fee Without FASTag (Cash / UPI) Vehicle Type
Class 1 (Car/Jeep/Van) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Light Motor Vehicle
Class 2 (LCV/Mini Bus) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Light Commercial Vehicle
Class 3 (Bus/Truck 2-Axle) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Heavy Commercial Vehicle
Class 4 (3-Axle Vehicle) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Multi-Axle Vehicle
Class 5 (4 to 6 Axle Vehicle) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Heavy Multi-Axle Vehicle
Class 6 (7+ Axle Vehicle) Plaza-specific fee (1x) 2x cash / 1.25x UPI Oversized Vehicle

The exact amount depends on the fee plaza, section length and structures on the route. Check the fee board at the plaza, the Toll Information System (tis.nhai.gov.in) or the Rajmarg Yatra app. For example, if the FASTag fee is ₹100, a vehicle without a valid FASTag pays ₹200 in cash or ₹125 through UPI.

Special Structure Toll Rates (2026 - Up to 50% Reduction)

Under the NH Fee Rules amendment notified on July 2, 2025, the chargeable length of a section with an independent bridge, tunnel, flyover or elevated highway is the lesser of two figures: 10 times the structure length plus the remaining section length, or 5 times the total section length. The table shows the effect on a 40 km section.

Structure Length (in 40 km Section) Earlier Chargeable Length Current Chargeable Length Reduction
10 km 130 km 130 km None
20 km 220 km 200 km About 9%
30 km 310 km 200 km About 35%
40 km (entire section) 400 km 200 km 50%

The reduction is therefore up to 50% and depends on how much of the section is a structure. Separately, when a National Expressway is only partially open, the completed stretch is charged at the lower National Highway rate (effective February 15, 2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my vehicle classified for toll purposes?

Vehicle classification is based on the size and load of the vehicle and its type of use (commercial or personal). Cars/jeeps/vans are Class 1, LCVs/mini-buses are Class 2, buses and 2-axle trucks are Class 3, 3-axle vehicles are Class 4, 4 to 6 axle vehicles are Class 5, and vehicles with 7 or more axles are Class 6. The FASTag class must match the vehicle's registration certificate.

What happens if I don't pay tolls?

Without a valid FASTag, you pay double the fee in cash or 1.25 times the fee through UPI. With insufficient FASTag balance, your tag gets blacklisted until you recharge. Unpaid user fees also block the NOC for transfer of vehicle ownership and, for commercial vehicles, the national permit.

Is the FASTag annual pass worth it?

Yes, if you would otherwise pay more than ₹3,075 a year in tolls on National Highways and Expressways. The pass costs ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27, covers 200 crossings or one year, whichever comes first, and is available only for non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans. It works out to about ₹15 per crossing if all 200 are used.

Will GPS-based tolling replace FASTag completely?

Not in the near term. Expert committees have recommended further deliberation on GPS-based barrier-free tolling, and the government is instead rolling out MLFF barrier-free tolling that uses ANPR with AI analytics along with FASTag (RFID). MLFF is awarded at 17 fee plazas with 5 already live, so FASTag remains the core payment system.

Can I use the same FASTag for multiple vehicles?

No, each FASTag is issued against a single vehicle's registration number. If a tag is used on another vehicle, the toll plaza system detects the class mismatch and the tag can be blacklisted. Under One Vehicle One FASTag, only the latest FASTag linked to a vehicle stays active.

How do I report an incorrect toll deduction?

Report it within 40 days of the transaction through helpline 1033, falsededuction@ihmcl.com, your FASTag issuer bank or the Rajmarg Yatra app. If the amount was charged wrongly, the bank raises a chargeback, which usually takes 20-30 working days.

What if the toll plaza equipment is not working?

If the ETC equipment is not working and you have a valid FASTag with sufficient balance, you are allowed to pass the toll plaza free of cost. Report the issue through helpline 1033.
