Maharashtra Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: FASTag Electronic Toll Collection (mandatory at MSRDC plazas from April 2025, cash discontinued at NHAI plazas from April 2026)
Operator: MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation), Maharashtra PWD, MMRDA and NHAI
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
Coverage: Major expressways, sea links, state highways and national highways across Maharashtra
Technology: FASTag RFID, License plate recognition, UPI fallback, Cashless tolling

Do I Need FASTag for Maharashtra? 2026 Update

Yes, FASTag is now mandatory at Maharashtra toll plazas. MSRDC plazas have required FASTag since April 1, 2025, and NHAI plazas have accepted only FASTag or UPI since April 10, 2026. At MSRDC plazas, driving without a valid FASTag results in double toll charges regardless of payment method (cash, card, or UPI). At NHAI plazas, cash is not accepted and UPI payment costs 1.25 times the toll.

Key Reality: The Maharashtra cabinet under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made FASTag mandatory at MSRDC and state highway plazas to achieve complete cashless toll collection and reduce waiting times. Non-compliance at these plazas attracts penalty charges of 100% of the base toll amount. On national highways, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways made tolling cashless from April 10, 2026.

2026 Update: The MSRDC rule applies to all MSRDC-operated toll plazas including Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, and other major highways. Only school buses, light motor vehicles, and state transport buses are exempt from the FASTag requirement, and only at the five Mumbai entry points (Dahisar, Mulund East, Mulund West, Airoli and Vashi), where light motor vehicles have also been toll-free since October 14, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid Maharashtra tolls completely?

Partially - you can use older state highways and bypass roads, but this adds 2-4 hours to most journeys and isn't practical for Mumbai-Pune or long-distance travel.

What happens if I don't have FASTag?

At MSRDC plazas you pay double the toll amount as penalty, regardless of whether you pay by cash, card, or UPI. At NHAI plazas cash is not accepted and you can pay by UPI at 1.25 times the toll. The only exemptions are for school buses, state transport buses and light motor vehicles at the five Mumbai entry points.

Do motorcycles pay tolls in Maharashtra?

Motorcycles are exempt from tolls at NHAI toll plazas, but two-wheelers are not permitted on access-controlled roads such as Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Check the rules for each road before you ride.

Are there discounts for frequent users?

Yes. Non-commercial vehicles registered within 20 km of an NHAI toll plaza can buy a monthly pass, and private vehicle owners can buy the FASTag Annual Pass (₹3,075 for 2026-27, valid for 200 crossings or one year at NHAI plazas). The Bandra-Worli Sea Link offers return, daily and monthly passes. FASTag also gives the standard rate without the surcharge applied to other payment methods.

How does the Samruddhi Mahamarg toll calculation work?

It's distance-based pricing - you pay per kilometre between the entry and exit points you use, rounded to the nearest ₹5. Cars pay ₹2.06 per km, so the full 701 km journey from Mumbai to Nagpur costs ₹1,445. These rates are fixed until March 2028.
