SunPass is a tag transponder to mainly pay tolls across Florida toll roads, express lanes and bridges electronically. Read on to learn what is SunPass, where does SunPass work, how does SunPass work, how much does SunPass cost, how to install it and more.

You can calculate toll charges to travel across Florida and other states for SunPass tag transponder using SunPass Toll Calculator.

What is a SunPass

The SunPass[1] is an electronic tag that you can install in your windshield to zoom through electronic toll gantries of Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. It requires the purchase and activation of a SunPass transponder. Tolls are automatically deducted from the account linked to the transponder when the vehicle passes through toll lanes.

You can create a SunPass account online and log in to track your SunPass payment, add money to SunPass account, missed tolls, etc.

Do I need a SunPass to travel on Florida toll roads

A SunPass transponder isn’t compulsory to travel on Florida’s toll roads; however, with a SunPass transponder, you can take advantage of SunPass discount plans and the SunPass Plus Parking. It also serves as an easy way to pay tolls on Florida’s toll roads, express lanes, most bridges and many out of state toll roads at the lowest toll rate available.

How does a SunPass work

A SunPass account is a prepaid account. Upon activation, a SunPass Portable or the SunPass Mini Transponder is to be installed on the windshield of the vehicle. A minimum amount is to be maintained in the prepaid account. As the vehicle passes through SunPass equipped lanes, the toll charges are electronically deducted from your prepaid toll account. SunPass Portable and SunPass Mini Transponders can be purchased, online, by phone[2], in person[3] or from retail locations[4]. SunPass also offers toll discount plans for motorists to save on their tolls.

Where can I purchase a SunPass

The SunPass Transponder could be purchased:

  • Online through SunPass website [5]
  • By phone
  • From 3100 designated retail locations throughout Florida
  • At all Turnpike service plazas, Turnpike gas stations, SunPass Service Centres, select Florida Welcome Centres, Visitor Centres, Rest Areas, and select County Tax Collector’s Offices.

How much does a SunPass for Florida cost

The SunPass Portable Transponder costs $19.99 plus tax and the SunPass Mini Transponder costs $4.99 plus tax. The SunPass transponder is an easy way to pay tolls and allows motorists to have tolls electronically deducted from the associated Prepaid Account.

How do I mount my SunPass transponder

The ideal mounting location of a SunPass transponder in car is near the rear-view mirror on the inside of the windsheild

The SunPass Portable transponder and the mini transponder are to be mounted on the inside of the vehicle’s windshield. Position the transponder either to the right or left of the rear-view mirror. If the windshield has a solar tint strip, the transponder is to be installed at least 2 inches below the strip. The SunPass Mini Transponder would not work on a motorcycle. However, you can use a Portable Transponder as long as it is properly mounted on the motorcycle windshield.

Which states is the SunPass accepted

SunPass is used primarily on state and local toll roads in Florida. It is accepted in three states currently: Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Passes compatible with SunPass

SunPass is compatible with E-Pass and LeeWay. It means all toll roads and bridges that take one of the passes accept the other two as well. Georgia’s PeachPass and North Carolina’s NC Quick Pass are interoperable with SunPass, E-Pass, or LeeWay.

Sun Pass is not compatible with E-ZPass. However, SunPass Pro is compatible with E-ZPass - in all the 17 states where E-ZPass is accepted.

On the other hand, E-ZPass may be used on some Orlando toll roads, where the E-Pass is accepted. It may not be used on other Florida toll roads outside the Orlando area. You cannot use SunPass on roads that accept E-ZPass in north, roads in Texas, or in California.

Can I pay toll in Florida without a SunPass

You can travel on Florida’s roads, expressways and bridges without a SunPass; however you would be charged through Toll-By-Plate at higher rate. In Toll-By-Plate, a photo would be snapped of your license plate as you pass through toll gantries. The bill for the toll will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Can I use SunPass in a rental vehicle

The SunPass transponder can be used in a rental vehicle. To do this, you would need to add the rental vehicle and license plate information to your SunPass account. Do remember that when you return your rental vehicle, remove these details from your SunPass account and the transponder, to prevent additional toll charges to you.

How do I add a rental vehicle to my SunPass account

Below is the step to add rental car vehicle details to your SunPass account:

  • Log in to your SunPass account
  • Click on Transponders and Vehicles
  • Click on Add Another Vehicle and fill in the rental vehicle details
  • Add the Start and End Date/Time
  • Check the Rental Vehicle box
  • Click Add Vehicle
